Wearable Technologies Conference 2026 Takes Place in Hong Kong
FHKI Signed MoU with Two Overseas Partners to Advance Medical Engineering
Organised by the WT|Wearable Technologies, the Wearable Technologies Conference 2026 returned to Hong Kong after a decade and was held at the Hong Kong Science Park on 4 to 5 March. Federation of Hong Kong Industries (FHKI) and its affiliated Medical Engineering & Innovation Council (MEIC) supported the landmark event as key partners. The conference was officiated by Prof Sun Dong, Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry of the HKSAR Government, who joined leading international experts and scholars to examine how wearable technology is reshaping the future of healthcare.
As the world grapples with ageing populations and the prevalence of chronic diseases, the healthcare paradigm is shifting from "treatment-based" to "prevention-based". Speaking at the "Enabling the Future of Healthcare" session, Dr Steve Chuang, Chairman of Hong Kong New Industrialisation Development Alliance, FHKI Honorary President and MEIC Co-Chairman, highlighted the transformative value of the sector, “Medical-grade wearables and remote monitoring are driving a fundamental shift, enabling us to move from episodic health checks to real-time, continuous, and personalised health management. However, technology cannot stand in isolation; a holistic ecosystem is vital. The MEIC was established to bridge the gap between research, clinical application, investors, and manufacturers. Leveraging Hong Kong’s role as a ‘super-connector’, we aim to translate research into tangible medical solutions that truly benefit patients.”
Another focal point of the conference was the “AI & the Wearable Ecosystem” session. Dr Alfred Ng, FHKI Deputy Chairman and MEIC Deputy Chairman, highlighted Hong Kong’s unique position within the industrial value chain, “The value of wearable technology has transcended mere hardware, evolving into a comprehensive solution that integrates sensing, connectivity, intelligence, and action. The key to future competitiveness lies in the seamless integration of these technologies to create genuine value for users.”
Delivering opening remarks at the conference, Dr Simon Cua, MEIC Co-Chairman, noted, “Hong Kong possesses a strong foundation in engineering and scientific research, supported by a world-class medical system and clinical research capabilities. Coupled with our proximity to the vast market of the Greater Bay Area, Hong Kong is uniquely positioned not only to help technologies in 'going global' but also serve as the premier platform for institutions to commercialise their cutting-edge medical innovations here.”
To further strengthen Hong Kong’s medical engineering ecosystem, the MEIC signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 3 March with Organization for Medical, Engineering and Commerce Collaboration.NPO (OMECC) from Japan and AiQuanMed Engineering & Innovation Council (AEIC) from Singapore. The three parties will establish a close collaborative platform to facilitate exchange across business development, professional training, talent, and sustainability, jointly advancing the life health and medical engineering industries in Hong Kong.
Held since 2006, the WT|Wearable Technologies Conference is a world’s leading platform for innovation and market development. This year, the renowned Innovation World Cup® Series, with a history of 15 years, was held in Hong Kong for the first time, showcasing advanced solutions in treatment, rehabilitation, and health monitoring.
FHKI established the MEIC in January 2025 to drive sustainable development, innovation, and implementation in the medical technology sector. The Council brings together local and international experts to explore the future of medical engineering in Hong Kong, acting as a vital bridge between the industry, the Government and other key stakeholders.
