Cheung Tak Ching, Chairman of Wah Lung Toys Co Ltd, and Dr Lewis Luk, Senior Associate of P. C. Woo & Co., honoured for their exceptional contributions
The Hong Kong Toys Council (HKTC) under the auspices of the Federation of Hong Kong Industries (FHKI), together with the Toys Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong (TMHK), co-hosted the “Hong Kong Toy Industry Dinner 2024 – Outstanding Achievement Award Presentation Ceremony” today (12 December). The biennial Outstanding Achievement Award was presented to Cheung Tak Ching, Chairman of Wah Lung Toys Co Ltd, while the newly launched Professional Contribution Award was awarded to Dr Lewis Luk, Senior Associate of P. C. Woo & Co. These awards recognise their remarkable achievements in the toy industry and their significant contributions to Hong Kong’s economy.
The recipient of the 2024 Outstanding Achievement Award, Cheung Tak Ching, Chairman of Wah Lung Toys Co Ltd, co-founded the company in 1983 with his business partners. Initially operating as an original equipment manufacturer (OEM), Wah Lung Toys later shifted to original design manufacturing (ODM), achieving greater business diversification. Despite facing many challenges, Cheung has remained steadfast in his philosophy of “excellence through diligence”, combining exceptional management skills with a people-centred approach to establish a strong reputation for the company. In 1987, he adopted a “front shop, back plant” model, relocating production to Shenzhen. He subsequently founded Wah Lung Toys (Longnan) Co Ltd and Huafenglong Toys (Xinfeng) Co Ltd. Today, the company employs 6,000 staff, with its products sold worldwide.
On receiving the award, Cheung expressed his gratitude for the recognition from the HKTM and HKTC. He stated, “For me, the greatest achievement is not personal success but the ability to empower those around me. I am deeply thankful to my friends in the toy industry who introduced clients to me in the early days of my career, especially one long-term client whose trust and support over the past 32 years have allowed my company to grow steadily and enriched my journey. Lastly, I must thank my wife for her unwavering support, which has allowed me to focus on my work. I love the toy industry and will continue to share my experiences, mentor the next generation, and contribute to this vibrant sector.”
The Professional Contribution Award was presented to Dr Lewis Luk, Senior Associate of P. C. Woo & Co., who has maintained a close connection with the toy industry for over 40 years. Dr Luk entered the sector in 1989, received the Hong Kong Young Industrialist Award from FHKI in 1995, and served as President of the Hong Kong Young Industrialists Association in 2003, where he led the industry through the economic challenges of the SARS outbreak. Throughout his career, Dr Luk has drawn on his legal expertise to assist the industry in resolving and mediating complex issues. He spearheaded the “Code of Business Conduct” certification programme for the Hong Kong toy industry, playing a key role in its drafting, revision, certification, and promotion. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he worked with toy manufacturers to promote local mask production. Since 2023, he has served as a member of the Chief Executive’s Policy Unit Expert Group, advising Hong Kong Government on strategic policy matters.
On receiving the award, Dr Luk expressed heartfelt gratitude for the industry’s recognition and support. Looking ahead, he pledged to seize the innovative opportunities within the toy industry. He stated, “My father, who won the Outstanding Achievement Award for Toy Industry in 1999, has always been my inspiration. I feel fortunate to carry forward his legacy of service. After joining the toy industry, my role evolved from a legal professional to overseeing factory management, which has been a continuous journey of growth and learning. Looking ahead, I believe e-commerce, intellectual property, and artificial intelligence will shape the future of the industry. I am committed to embracing these changes, seizing new opportunities, and driving innovation together with the industry.”
The Outstanding Achievement Award for Hong Kong’s Toy Industry, established in 1996, celebrates its 15th edition this year. Winners are selected by a panel of experienced professionals from the toy sector, acknowledging their exceptional accomplishments and dedication to advancing the industry. The award also aims to inspire young talent to pursue careers in the toy industry. Past recipients are widely regarded as pioneers who have played pivotal roles in the growth of Hong Kong’s toy industry, manufacturing sector, and overall economy.
The event brought together industry leaders from the HKTC and TMHK, who engaged in insightful discussions on the development and future of Hong Kong’s toy industry.
