The Federation of Hong Kong Industries (FHKI) held the first meeting of the 2019-21 term General Committee and elected Dr Daniel Yip as Chairman of FHKI. Six newly elected Deputy Chairmen are Dr Sunny Chai, Sunny Tan, Steve Chuang, Ricky Chan, Jude Chow and Prof Karen Chan.
Looking ahead, FHKI’s new Chairman Dr Daniel Yip said that he wishes to rejuvenate Hong Kong industries through three measures. First, to explore “new business opportunities” through cross-sector business matching. Second, to connect and facilitate mutually beneficial collaboration between industrialists and start-ups for commercialising “new concepts”. With the number of start-ups soared by 150% over the past five years, Dr Yip said, “the start-up ecosystem is thriving. Many start-ups come from overseas, which proves that Hong Kong, as an international metropolis, is still very attractive. The HKSAR Government also demonstrated its determination to promote innovation and technology by committing over $100 billion so far.”
Third, to actively enhance the industry image, support young industrialists and entrepreneurs as well as encourage the industries to help promote vocational education for attracting “new talents”. Dr Yip said, “in addition to making up for talent supply shortage and promoting long term development, we take it as a responsibility of industrialists to create more paths for the youth.”
The outgoing Chairman Jimmy Kwok thanks the HKSAR Government, academia and research institutes etc. for their continuous support to FHKI. In his two-year term, he is impressed by FHKI’s devotion to help the industries surmount external challenges, “in face of the uncertainties brought by China-US trade dispute, other than gaining substantial supporting measures from both Mainland and Hong Kong Governments, assisting the industries in tapping into new markets is of utmost importance. In particular, we strongly support the ‘Belt and Road’ initiative and the Greater Bay Area development by putting forward a series of practical suggestions.”
Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Edward Yau attended the FHKI Annual Luncheon as the Guest-of-Honour and delivered a speech. He mentioned that industrialists and entrepreneurs have been promoting the economic development in Hong Kong. The key to success lies in their perseverance, can-do spirit and inheritance. Not only do they strive for perfection and innovation, but also cater to the needs of customers and employees. They have made a great contribution to Hong Kong economy. Secretary for Innovation and Technology Nicholas Yang, Secretary for Labour and Welfare Dr Law Chi-kwong, Secretary for Education Kevin Yeung and Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Patrick Nip also attended the annual luncheon.
