FHKI Delegation's First Stop in Indonesia Established ASEAN Chapter
Memorandums of Understanding Signed with Local Chambers of Commerce
to Attract Investment and Expand Business Opportunities
The Federation of Hong Kong Industries (FHKI) achieved a major milestone in its strategic collaboration with countries of the Belt and Road initiatives. During a six-day delegation mission to Indonesia and Thailand from 21-26 Jan, FHKI successfully signed two separate Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce (KADIN) and the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong (INACHAMHK). Led by FHKI Chairman Steve Chuang, the delegation mission also had the privilege of being received by the Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia, Lu Kang, in Jakarta.
A highlight of the visit was the business forum held in Jakarta last night (22 Jan), co-organised by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Jakarta, INACHAMHK, and supported by HSBC Indonesia as the exclusive financial institution sponsor. Esteemed guests including Cahyo Purnomo, Director of Investment Promotion at the Ministry of Investment; Syahroni Ahmad, Director of Access to Industrial Resources and International Promotion at the Ministry of Industry; Arief Wibisono, Director of Market Development and Export Information at the Ministry of Trade, were in attendance along with nearly 200 representatives from the public and business sectors of both markets. They exchanged valuable insights on future economic and trade interactions, particularly in the areas of the digital economy, green economy, and “Environmental, Social, and Governance” (ESG) initiatives.
At the business forum cum dinner, the FHKI proudly signed separate MoUs with KADIN and INACHAMHK, inaugurating a new era of strategic collaboration. These MoUs establish a cooperative framework to support industrial development and foster a deeper understanding and cooperation between the business communities of Hong Kong and Indonesia. They facilitate broad exchange and collaboration across various sectors ranging from economy, business, trade, human resource management to sustainable growth, aiming to enhance economic development and prosperity.
Hong Kong ranks as Indonesia's sixth-largest trading partner, reflecting a close-knit bilateral trade relationship. With an economy that is rich in natural resources and projected to grow by 5%, Indonesia presents a vibrant market, especially for SMEs. Its significant population, the fourth-largest worldwide, with 60% of its nearly 280 million people within the working age bracket of 15 to 64 years, illustrates the country's substantial labour and consumer markets.
FHKI Chairman Steve Chuang expressed the delegation's mission, emphasising the establishment of connections, the exploration of Indonesia's potential as an expanded production base and a new market, and the promotion of Hong Kong's competitive advantages. He stated, “Indonesia is a pivotal member of ASEAN and the 'Belt and Road' Initiative, with a conducive business environment and exceptional labour force. Given the swiftly evolving international business landscape, Hong Kong enterprises may potentially consider local investments as a means to enhance the flexibility of their supply chains. Another fundamental aim of the mission is to actively showcase Hong Kong's strengths and to attract investment to our city.”
FHKI has always been committed to supporting the national promotion of the Belt and Road Initiative. In addition to establishing the Belt and Road Committee last year to promote connections between Hong Kong's industrial sector and different regions along the Belt and Road, this trip also marked the establishment of the ASEAN Chapter. The ASEAN Chapter will set up its first office in Vietnam to provide on-site support for Hong Kong businesses across ASEAN member countries and leverage the commercial networks of Hong Kong businesses to promote trade and investment between the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and ASEAN countries.
Chairman Chuang emphasised, “FHKI has consistently led the business community to support Hong Kong in leveraging its unique advantages of 'enjoying strong support of the Motherland and being closely connected to the world'. Over the past three years, we have led delegations or participated in visits led by our Chief Executive to countries along the Belt and Road, and signed cooperation agreements to promote mutual investment cooperation, thereby unlocking regional business opportunities for Hong Kong's businesses.”
The FHKI delegation, led by Chairman Chuang and co-organised by the International Affairs Committee and the Belt and Road Committee, comprises over 30 members, including FHKI Executive Deputy Chairmen Anthony Lam, Ricky Chan and Clara Chan; FHKI Deputy Chairmen Jude Chow, Karen Chan, Gary Lau and Jackie Ng; FHKI Director-General Bonnie Chan; Head of Innovation and Technology of Invest Hong Kong Andy Wong, and leaders from Hong Kong manufacturing and I&T sectors.
FHKI expresses its utmost appreciation for the unfailing support of its partners in Hong Kong and Indonesia, including ETO Indonesia, INACHAMHK, LalaMove, the exclusive financial institution sponsor of the business forum cum dinner HSBC Indonesia, and Deloitte Indonesia. The delegation was also warmly received by Sinar Mas Group, Indonesian digital bank Bank Saqu, Bank BRI, virtual office services provider vOffice, and Circle K Indonesia. Without their generous sponsorships and contributions, the delegation mission will not be as successful! The delegation completed its activities in Jakarta, Indonesia today (January 23) and then set off to Bangkok, Thailand to continue its journey.
