FHKI Unveils "Carbon Management and CBAM Online Tool"
to Streamline Emissions Calculation for Industry

Federation of Hong Kong Industries (FHKI) has officially launched the Carbon Management and CBAM Online Tool, a complimentary carbon emissions calculation platform designed to assist enterprises in estimating the carbon footprint of their products. To mark the launch, the Federation held a seminar today (21 January) to introduce the latest developments regarding the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and provide a user guide for the online tool. Experts from the banking, business, professional services, carbon auditing, and talent training sectors were invited to share their successful experiences and key insights on corporate carbon management. Over 80 guests joined the seminar.

FHKI Chairman Mr Anthony Lam remarked, “This year marks the beginning of the nation's 15th Five-Year Plan, which sets out a clear path to actively and steadily achieve carbon peaking. As a free online platform, the Carbon Management and CBAM Online Tool offers businesses—particularly SMEs—a simple way to estimate carbon emissions. FHKI believes this tool will serve as a starting point for enterprises to achieve carbon neutrality, helping the industry implement effective carbon management and auditing to seize opportunities in green transformation. FHKI will continue to work hand-in-hand with the industry to accelerate Hong Kong’s green economic development and better integrate into the overall national development framework.”

Commissioned by FHKI, the Carbon Management and CBAM Online Tool was developed by the Institute for Climate and Carbon Neutrality (ICCN) at the University of Hong Kong. It forms part of the project titled “Facilitating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Compliance in Supply Chain Management for Hong Kong-invested Manufacturing Enterprises (HKMEs)”. The platform offers two specific calculation tools: a generic version for all manufacturing sectors, and a specialised version for the iron, steel, and aluminium industries. Enterprises can input data into the platform free of charge to rapidly estimate product carbon emissions and potential future tax liabilities. This data serves as a reference for adjusting production lines to ensure compliance with the EU’s CBAM or other regional carbon management requirements.

Clara Chan, FHKI Executive Deputy Chairman and Chairman of the Project Steering Committee, stated, “Hong Kong connects the upstream green manufacturing capabilities of the Mainland with global buyers, serving as an international hub for green metal trading, financing, and risk management. Enterprises should leverage Hong Kong’s unique advantages to shift from a reactive to a proactive approach in integrating carbon management with green supply chains. By establishing a traceable carbon data system, businesses can significantly enhance their competitive edge.”

To enhance the industry’s understanding of the latest EU CBAM requirements and response strategies, Richard Lin, Project Manager at ICCN, outlined the most recent policy developments at the seminar. He also moderated a panel discussion with industry representatives titled “How Enterprises Can Start Carbon Management – From the First Step to Success”, where successful corporate experiences were shared as a reference for the industry.

The project “Facilitating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Compliance in Supply Chain Management for Hong Kong-invested Manufacturing Enterprises (HKMEs)" was funded by the Trade and Industrial Organisation Support Fund (TSF) under the Trade and Industry Department, for which FHKI expresses its sincere gratitude. The Federation also extends its appreciation to the ICCN team at the University of Hong Kong for their professional analysis and research, to the Project Steering Committee for their professional advice, and to all guest speakers and industry participants for their active support.
