The HKNIDA Welcomes the New Channel for the Admission of
Professionals of Specified Skilled Trades
The Hong Kong New Industrialisation Development Alliance (HKNIDA) welcomes the Government’s launch of the Technical Professional List, which allows outside individuals to apply for entry into Hong Kong to join eight specified skilled trades. HKNIDA appreciates the Government’s active response to the demands of the industry, noting that the new scheme covers areas where Hong Kong urgently needs talents, such as new industrialisation technicians, including smart/automated manufacturing, robotics engineering, biomedical engineering, microelectronics engineering, etc.
According to the Government’s estimation, Hong Kong is projected to face a labour shortage of 18,000 to 23,000 regarding the development of the International Innovation and Technology Centre. The Chairman of the HKNIDA, Dr Steve Chuang, pointed out that the new scheme comes at the right time as the global talent competition is becoming increasingly fierce. “Hong Kong is at a critical stage in the development of new industries and I&T. The introduction of the new channel for professionals of specified skilled trades would help the industry to attract the much-demanded professionals. These talents, especially in emerging fields such as smart manufacturing, automation, and biomedicine, will bring advanced skills and valuable practical experience to Hong Kong, accelerating the upgrading and transformation of the local industries.” said Dr Chuang.
Dr Chuang suggested the Government regularly review the effectiveness of the new scheme, and should continue to promote cross-sector cooperation in cultivating local I&T talents to ensure the sustainability of the talent supply. He emphasised that encouraging all sectors to integrate artificial intelligence and innovative technologies into industrial development will further promote the new industrialisation process of Hong Kong and could achieve a qualitative leap.
