The 2008/09 award presentation cum 2009/10 launch ceremony of the Hang Seng Pearl River Delta Environmental Awards under the One Factory - One Year - One Environmental Project (One¡VOne¡VOne) Programme, jointly organised by the Federation of Hong Kong Industries (FHKI) and Hang Seng Bank, was held today (9 December) at Hang Seng Bank¡¦s headquarters, with Dr Kitty Poon, Under Secretary for the Environment; Cliff Sun, Chairman of the FHKI; and Margaret Leung, Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive of Hang Seng Bank being the officiating guests.
Into its second year, the awards received 123 entries covering a total of 400 environmental projects in eight areas: energy conservation, water management, waste discharge reduction and treatment, recycling of resources, air emissions, noise abatement, green management and others.
The energy conservation projects implemented by companies entering the competition reduced air emissions by over 540,000 tons (equivalent to the annual air emissions of 190,000 private cars in Hong Kong); reduced waste by 1.8 million tons (equivalent to the waste created in Hong Kong over 100 days), water usage by 10 million cubic metres (a volume equivalent to about 3,200 standard 50-m swimming pools) and electricity consumption by over 37 million kWh (equivalent to the annual electricity needed to run 4,200 air-conditioners).
Kingdom Fine Metal Ltd, winner of the Hang Seng Pearl River Delta Environmental Awards and Hang Seng Pearl River Delta Environmental Category Awards - Air Emissions last year, was conferred with the Grand Award this year. In 2008, the company succeeded in reducing carbon dioxide emissions by over 1,000 tons, wastewater by over 2,500 tons and diesel oil usage by 36,000 litres. With its sights set on cleaner production, Kingdom has implemented more than 20 environmental projects, including:

l Introducing an ionised water cleaning machine to replace solvent cleaning;
l Creating a comfortable working environment by utilising a ¡¥Draft Cooling System¡¦;
l Reforming the entire water treatment system and recycling wastewater;
l Introducing a stamping machine equipped with Power Saver;
l Installing a power-saving reflector panel to reduce the number of light tubes.
Mr Sun said: ¡§The FHKI has been dedicated to continually improving the environment by means of advocating ¡¥Green Management¡¦ and ¡¥Cleaner Production¡¦ in the business sector as early as 2005. This year, it is encouraging to see more companies participating in the One¡VOne¡VOne Programme. It is also encouraging to see significant increased participation of PRD-based companies this year. That definitely proves the effectiveness of this Programme.¡¨
Mrs Leung said: ¡§It is everyone¡¦s responsibility to help combat the problem of climate change. Sustainability should be central to the business strategy of all enterprises. As a green bank, Hang Seng uses resources in a responsible manner and is committed to encouraging our stakeholders ¡V including our customers, shareholders, staff and suppliers ¡V to support sustainable development. Hang Seng is pleased to join hands with the FHKI to encourage more PRD enterprises to enhance their environmental performance and participate in the coming year¡¦s Awards.¡¨
Twelve awards were presented at the ceremony, including the Hang Seng Pearl River Delta Environmental Grand Award, three Hang Seng Pearl River Delta Environmental Awards, and eight Hang Seng Pearl River Delta Environmental Category Awards. In addition, over 60 ¡¥Green Medalist¡¦ and ¡¥Green Participant¡¦ certificates were presented to companies to acknowledge their green contribution.

The panel of judges included representatives of the two award organisers, as well as The Hon Cheng Yiu-tong, Non-Official member of the Executive Council and Convenor of the Sustainable Development Sub-group of The Greater Pearl River Delta Business Council; Ou Jun, Deputy Secretary of the Guangdong Association of Environmental Protection Industry; Sunny Chai, Chairman of the Hong Kong Green Manufacturing Alliance; David Wong, Principal Environmental Protection Officer (Cross-Boundary & International) of the Environmental Protection Department, HKSARG; Ir Edmund Leung, Chairman of Energy Advisory Committee, Ralph Chow, Director of Product Promotion of Hong Kong Trade Development Council, Mei Ng, Member of the Board of Governors of Friends of the Earth (Hong Kong) and Prof Carlos Lo of Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
A series of seminars and two study missions were held during the past year in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Dongguan and Foshan, in which green experts and industry professionals were invited to share their experience in energy conservation and waste reduction. Representatives from hundreds of manufacturing business attended these events.
In its third year, the Awards are now inviting applicants to submit 2009/2010 environmental projects. Companies with outstanding environmental achievements can compete for the Grand Award.
