Group 17: Spinning

Competition from Pakistani, Indian and mainland Chinese manufacturers is significantly influencing Hong Kong’s spinning, weaving, and dyeing and finishing industry. Also the aging skilled workforce will have a negative impact on long-term development. However, the further development of specialised and custom-made items, production of high value-added products through the use of state-of-art equipment such as open-ended spinning machine and shuttleless looms, will bolster quality and capacity, taking the industries to a new level of operation.

Modern management techniques that focus on high quality will continue to benefit the industry in the near future, and will redefine production processes such as weaving and dyeing. Stringent environmental requirements will significantly affect the use of colourants and finishing chemicals. The future of this industry is very much aligned with other textiles industries and thus is exposed to the same risks. Trade measures from the US and the EU will be an important concern.
