The chemical industry has a huge industrial base that produces plastics, resins, synthetic fibres, and is also involved with the processing and mixing of imported chemicals. The industry is upgrading itself and improving its manufacturing facilities to conform to international standards. Schemes such as the Good Laboratory and Manufacturing Practises, Total Quality Management and ISO 9000 are widely practised. These practises extend to the pharmaceutical industry, where there are over 200 established enterprises, including firms specialising in Chinese medicine.
Areas for growth include Chinese medicine, biotechnology, and the combination of the two. Hong Kong is in a unique position to take advantage of advanced biotechnology methods and apply them with its expertise in Chinese medicine. The government’s recent plans for developing the Chinese medicine industry are encouraging signs, where the ultimate goal is to have private enterprises develop new pharmaceuticals based on Chinese medicines.
